Lisa Kudrow Reveals ‘Friends’ Executives Felt Monica Was Too ‘Slutty’
During a recent appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," Lisa Kudrow revealed that while starring in the hit NBC show "Friends," producers felt that the character Monica Gellar -- played by Courteney Cox -- was "too slutty" for viewers, Us Weekly reports.
Kudrow explained that the show's TV pilot -- which debuted in 1994 -- featured a scene where Geller has a one-night stand with a salesman -- a plot line that was considered "too slutty" and too racy for television at the time.
"They were really nervous that the audience won't like her 'cause she's sleeping with him on the first date [and maybe think] it's slutty," Kudrow revealed to Kimmel.
Kudrow also revealed that NBC producers created a survey for audience members to fill out in order to determine whether they felt Cox's character was too hot for TV.
"They actually made up a survey to give to the audience to ask them questions like, 'So Monica sleeps with this guy, Bob the sales guy, on the first date, and how does that make you feel? A: I'm fine with it. B...' something like that! It was a survey, and most of them were like, 'It's fine!'" she said, also noting that viewers were "irritated" by the producers' questioning.
In addition to talking about "Friends," Kudrow also talked about her return to HBO's "The Comeback" as Valerie Cherish, the Wrap reports.
The show will soon debut its second season following a nine-year hiatus, says the Wrap.
Kudrow blamed the show's timing as the reason for the show's abrupt cancellation following its first season.
According to the New York Times, "The Comeback" tells the story of actress Valerie Cherish who decides to star in her own reality-TV show.
At the time, the show debuted during a period where reality-TV was still a new genre in TV culture which is probably why it was short-lived, Kudrow explained to Kimmel.
But now that some time has passed and reality-TV has grown exponentially, HBO will be airing "The Comeback's" second season on Nov. 9.
Fans can watch the first season of "The Comeback" on Amazon for a "reasonable" price, the New York Times reports.
