Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya is determined to make the showdown between Miguel Cotto and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez happen next year.

De La Hoya said in a recent interview that both fighters are looking for big fights next year, and the Hall of Fame boxer is convinced that there is no bigger fight than the Cotto-Canelo bout.

"Obviously they both want the fight. It's the biggest fight that can be done next year," De La Hoya said. "Miguel Cotto has been looking good and Canelo is a strong and fast fighter who has not yet reached his peak. It's the fight that everyone wants to see and Canelo wants to fight on May 2."

De La Hoya also said in an interview with Tha Boxing Voice that fight fans are losing interest in the long-proposed showdown between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, saying that he has been hearing a lot of requests to make the Cotto-Canelo showdown happen.

"Forget about Mayweather- Pacquiao, let's start talking about Canelo-Cotto," De La Hoya said. "From the feedback that I've been receiving everywhere I go, phone calls that I get, emails I receive, it's Canelo-Cotto. We feel that it's our obligation as Canelo's promoter to hopefully make that happen relatively soon."

De La Hoya is confident that the Cotto-Alvarez fight will do good numbers and could even get two million PPV buys if the fight happens in 2015. He said that both fighters have a very good fan base and that the fight will renew the rivalry between Mexican and Puerto Rican boxers.

When asked if the fight should be considered as a done deal for 2015, De La Hoya admitted, however, that negotiations for the bout won't be as easy as it looks.

"We'll see what happens," De La Hoya said. "This is a complicated negotiation. We have to see where we can make it, be it at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Las Vegas, elsewhere in Texas. I want the best for the fight."
