Boxing News Updates: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Inks Deal With Al Haymon; Top Rank’s Bob Arum Preparing Lawsuit?
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. officially inked a deal with new manager Al Haymon, and the Mexican boxing superstar is already preparing for big fights under his new handler.
Chavez revealed in a statement that he is now officially under Haymon, who also handles the career of several big-name fighters like Floyd Mayweather Jr., Marcos Maidana, Adrien Broner, Danny Garcia, Amir Khan, Lucas Matthysse and Shawn Porter.
"I want to give all my fans an update on my boxing future," Chavez said in a statement via Yahoo Sports. "I had a great meeting on Friday with my team: my lawyer Howard Weitzman, my manager Al Haymon and Billy Keane."
The 28-year-old boxing superstar also announced that his camp is already setting up his next fight, saying that he will make sure that he will face the best possible opponent in early 2015.
"They have begun the process of setting up my next fight, which will occur in early 2015," Chavez said. "We are looking at a number of top opponents because I only want to fight the best moving forward. The details of my next fight will be finalized in the very near future. So stay tuned."
Meanwhile, Bob Arum blasted Chavez for inking a deal with Haymon, saying that they will let the court decide as he reiterated that the former World Boxing Council middleweight champion still has one fight left in his contract with Top Rank Promotions.
"We want the court to declare that we have one more fight with [Chavez]," Arum said. "In other words, we're in court as it is now. Now we're going to bring action against Haymon and so forth for interfering with our contract."
Chavez, who holds an impressive 48-1-1 record with 32 knockouts, has fought just once this year -- against Brian Vera in March -- which is reportedly the reason why his camp opted to part ways with Top Rank.
Arum's Top Rank Promotions tried to arrange a showdown between Chavez and Gennady Golovkin earlier this year, but the Sinaloa, Mexico, native reportedly declined to face the reigning World Boxing Association and International Boxing Organization middleweight champion.
