Marvel Avengers 2 'Age of Ultron' Spoilers, Characters & Cast News: Marvel to Nab Culprit Who Leaked Trailer & Takes Google to Court
The top dogs at Marvel Entertainment may have a good sense of humor, but when it comes the execution of schedules and leaked information involving its massive blockbusters and franchises, business is no laughing matter.
On Oct. 22, the first trailer for "Avengers: Age of Ultron" leaked, revealing juicy details about the film ahead of schedule. In an effort to rectify the situation, the company tried to send takedown notices for the trailer but also felt obligated to release an official version and poster almost a week ahead of schedule.
While Marvel made light of the situation via Twitter, releasing a tweet that read, "Dammit, Hydra," it later took matters more seriously from a legal standpoint.
On Tuesday, the company reportedly asked a judge for a subpoena against Google so it could determine the identity of the leaker. On Wednesday, the subpoena was granted.
"Marvel asked for information on pseudonymous user 'John Gazelle,' who uploaded a version of the trailer to Google Drive," The Verge reports. "The judge agreed, telling Google to fork over the IP address of the person who uploaded the leaked file to Drive, as well as the IP addresses associated with the person's Google+ and YouTube accounts. On Nov. 18, Google will have to appear in court with that information."
Cracking down on leaks is nothing new for Marvel. According to reports, this summer, a full-length version of the new "Expendables" movie leaked ahead of its release, and the movie didn't fare so well in the box office.
This time around, however, Marvel is upping the ante with "Avengers: Age of Ultron" in the hopes that it will be "the blockbuster event of the year." Therefore it's not taking any more chances or compromising its schedule.
"Avengers: Age of Ultron," stars Robert Downey Jr., James Spader, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Scarlett Johannson, Don Cheadle, Elizabeth Olsen, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner and Lou Ferrigno, among others.
The "Avengers 2" plot is based on Tony Stark (Downey Jr./Iron Man) trying to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, but when things go awry, it's up to The Avengers to stop the villainous Ultron from enacting his terrible plans.
Check out the official teaser trailer for Marvel's "Avengers: Age of Ultron," (not John Gazelle's version), which hits theaters May 1, 2015.
