Pan's Labyrinth, Instructions Not Included & Hollywood's Growing Interest In Spanish-Language Films
Instructions Not Included tells the story of a Mexican playboy named Valentin whose life is capsized when a former lover leaves a baby on his doorstep and disappears. Though an unlikely father figure, he raises his daughter alone and becomes a premiere Hollywood stuntman in order in order to support them. The relationship between Valentin and his daughter is a rich one, and the presence of his daughter matures him. However, the happiness of the father/daughter duo is threatened when out of the blue, the daughter's mother appears with the intention of reclaiming her daughter.
The film, which stars and is directed by Mexican comedian Eugenio Derbez, has cleared $38.6 to date, bypassing Pan's Labyrinth as the highest grossing Spanish-language film in the domestic box office. The film has also become the fourth highest-grossing foreign-language film, tailing foreign classics, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Taiwan), Life is Beautiful (Italy) and Hero (China).
The buying power of the Latino community is evident with the financial success of this film, and films like it. And it shows a growing interest in Latino film and entertainment by outsiders. Since the 1920s there has been a flaring interest in Hollywood-sanctioned Spanish-language films, but it is only within recent years that these films have garnered box office results that are in any way comparable to English-language films of the same caliber.
In 2006, the film Pan's Labyrinth was released. Guillermo del Toro directed this chilling dark fantasy about a young girl whose fascination with fairy tales leads her to create her own vivid world in order to escape her harsh reality. The film, a sequel to the less successful The Devil's Backbone, made $5.4 million during its limited three week presence in theaters, grossed $37.6 million in North America, and earned $80 million worldwide, becoming the highest grossing Spanish-language film of all time. The film also claimed three Academy Awards and several other accolades. Seven years later, Spanish speakers and non-Spanish speakers alike flocked to the theaters to witness the cinematic gem that is Instructions Not Included.
Pantelion Films, the first heavyweight Latino Hollywood studio which brought Instuctions Not Included to audiences, is set to release Pulling Strings, a bilingual rom-com set in Mexico City. Other pending projects are The Hours, a movie starring Paul Walker and Genesis Rodriguez, and a biopic about civil rights activist Cesar Chavez. The studio is also responsible for recognizable films such as Girl in Progress and From Prada to Nada.
