New Boxing Matches 2014: Oscar De La Hoya Confirms Negotiation for Miguel Cotto vs Canelo Alvarez Fight
Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya confirmed that he has already made moves to make the highly anticipated showdown between Miguel Cotto and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in 2015.
De La Hoya said in an interview with Dan Rafael of ESPN that he has already reached out to Top Rank Promotions president Todd duBoef and Cotto's legal adviser Gaby Peñagaricano about the fight.
The Hall of Fame boxer added that he is planning to discuss the fight with Top Rank CEO Bob Arum soon, saying that the famed promoter will decide for Cotto. "Golden Boy" is confident that the fight will happen, adding that fight fans are already asking him about the showdown.
"That's the fight that's being talked about the most," De La Hoya said of the Cotto-Canelo fight. "Everywhere I go people are asking me about it left and right. This is what's going to happen - my next move is going to be to give Bob Arum a call and start discussing the fight with Bob."
De La Hoya is also optimistic that the fight negotiation will run smoothly despite reports that the two camps are already lining up their respective demands.
Cotto's camp reportedly wants to enter the ring last, but De La Hoya believes that Canelo's camp will have no problem with it because the Puerto Rican will likely defend his World Boxing Council middleweight title.
"Miguel Cotto is the champion and a great champion, and he is also a star, so he gets the champion status treatment, which means we're fighting for his belt," De La Hoya said. "He walks second if he wants to, all that stuff. None of that will hold up this fight."
As for the fight purse, De La Hoya is also convinced that money will not be an issue because both fighters will likely get the biggest paycheck of their respective careers if they agree to face each other next year.
"Miguel Cotto is not going to let this fight fall through because they are not happy with the money, and Canelo is not calling off a fight because of the money," said De La Hoya, who is open to a 50-50 purse split. "They will make the biggest purses of their careers fighting each other."
