Wii U Video Game Sales and Release Update: Smash Bros, Mario Kart 8 Help Boost Nintendo Sales
The Nintendo Wii U console has been selling well throughout 2014 and the company is looking to continue that through the remaining holiday season. This Nintendo device has been the first in many years that has been profitable.
In the 10 months of this year so far, purchases for the gaming console and other hardware have increased 47 percent, according to Nintendo. Also, the sales of software have risen 84 percent, largely due to popular game titles like "Mario Kart 8."
"Those numbers are both poised to grow with the one-two punch of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and amiibo on Nov. 21, which are then quickly joined by Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker on Dec. 5," Nintendo added, according to afterdawn.com.
Speculation also has the price on hardware in the next few weeks to promote customers toward picking up more games and consoles, but Nintendo so far has not confirmed this kind of incentive.
Electronics retailers like Best Buy are also offering bundles of several popular game titles, with a Wii U purchase for discount to Black Friday shoppers.
Besides offering slashed prices, new game releases are expected to continue the trend of high sales for the gaming device. "Super Smash Bros." is now the title Nintendo is pinning its hopes on for continued success with the Wii U.
Pre-orders of "Super Smash Bros." have already surpassed the numbers bought before "Mario Kart 8" was released and Nintendo of America's president, Reggie Fils-Aime, is optimistic that this video game will equal or exceed sales once released.
"Our expectation is that the sell-through for 'Smash' is going to be very strong, certainly on par with what we saw with 'Mario Kart 8,'" he said in an interview with Bloomberg. "We think the impact on hardware will be similarly dramatic...Consumers buy the hardware so they can play the software. When you have a robust library of games, that's when consumers jump in."
