Oscar Pistorius Murder Trial Update: Reeva Steenkamp's Mother Speaks Out About 'Blade Runner'
Reeva Steenkamp's mother, June, is speaking out against her daughter's killer, Oscar Pistorius.
In September, the Paralympic athlete, also known as the "Blade Runner," was found not guilty of murder in the 2013 shooting death of Reeva Steenkamp, who was his girlfriend at the time. The Olympic champ argued that he shot the 29-year-old model on Feb. 14 by mistake because he thought she was a home intruder.
Although Judge Thokozile Masipa acquitted him of murder charges, she found him guilty of culpable homicide, a lesser charge that is comparable to manslaughter. She then sentenced the double-amputee runner to five years at Pretoria Central Prison. However, he is only required to serve 10 months behind bars before he can be moved to community supervision or house arrest.
In her first radio interview, Reeva's 67-year-old mother said she and her estranged husband, Barry, are haunted by the thought of their daughter's final moments on earth.
"We have nightmares about it [Reeva's final moments] the whole time, that's been the hardest part to get though, that she would have been expecting God to come and saver her, and where were we?" June told BBC Radio5Live, according to the Daily Mail.
She went on to say that she will never forget seeing the images of Pistorius taken after he shot her daughter during his trial.
"That will never be removed from my mind. He looked like a mad person."
June also revealed that she does not think the 28-year-old Paralympian was in love with her daughter, and instead looked at her as arm candy.
"I don't think he loved her, I think she was just a trophy," she said.
Prosecutors are seeking to appeal Judge Thokozile Masipa's decision to acquit Pistorius of murder on the grounds that the judge made an error in her interpretation of the law. They also called the athlete's sentence "shockingly light."
