Mexico President Enrique Peña Nieto's Stepdaughter Sofia Castro Called a Thief Before Attending Latin Grammys
Sofia Castro, the stepdaughter of Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto, was verbally attacked before attending the Latin Grammys in Las Vegas on Thursday. A woman approached Castro and her entourage of bodyguards on their way to the show, yelling phrases translating to "Stop stealing money from Mexico!"
The woman, who continued to call her a thief and said she was tired of the issues facing Mexico, was caught on tape. The video was shared online and on Spanish-language television news.
The 18-year-old actress tried to keep a low-profile in general at the music awards show. She did not talk to press on the red carpet and didn't even walk down the entrance for photographers.
The lack of on-camera time with Castro, who is the daughter of Mexican director and producer Jose Alberto Castro and first lady Angelica Rivera, was probably a tactic to avoid any further criticism of the presidential family in the media.
Castro recently came under fire for the indifferent comments she made about the 43 missing Ayotzinapa students. While attending the 2014 Premios Arlequin red carpet, she said she didn't want to talk about the reportedly dead students.
"I don't think this is the time to talk about this," Castro said. "All of Mexico is in mourning because of what's happened, but I don't think right now is the moment. Right now, we are here to enjoy ourselves and for me to get my award."
Beyond the young girl's own issues with the press, her family has drawn significant comments from her mother's recent purchase of a $7 million home. When Nieto explained that his wife was a successful woman in her own right, people began mocking the actress' career online.
"Given all the accusations that have put my honor in doubt, I want to clear up to you that I have nothing to hide. I have worked my whole life, and thanks to that I am an independent woman," Rivera said in a speech.
Many pop culture figures took the chance to poke fun at the former soap star's career. Even U.S. comedian and actor Rob Schneider tweeted, "Well, that's it! I'm moving to MEXICO to get a job on a SOAP OPERA!! I hear they PAY 10 MILLION!"
