'Doctor Who' Comic Books Review: 'New Adventures of the Twelfth Doctor: TERRORFORMER' Weaves in Season 8 Storylines
The 12th Doctor has no witty lines or catch phrases; he is there to help others and to save the universe whenever needed. This particular guy is a no-nonsense kind of Time Lord, his character is captured fully in the first of his issue in the "New Adventures of the Twelfth Doctor: TERRORFORMER."
While Season 8 of "Doctor Who" has just ended, Whovians can enjoy the 12th Doctor in this latest comic book incarnation. The Doctor is joined by the "impossible girl" Clara Oswald, his trusty companion. This gives the readers an up, so they do not have to get used to a new companion.
Cover artist Alice X. Zhang captures the 12th Doctor vividly, more so than the 10th and the 11th Doctors. The overall artists: Dave Taylor and colorists HI-FI transport the reader to a brightly colored planet that was once a cold planet of ice, ISEN VI. It is now made up of colored animals, foliage and some strange lurking creature. The comic is stunning, with bright red hues, almost like art. Each page pops with brightness.
The classic 12th Doctor and Clara ostensibly came to ISEN VI so that Clara could learn how to ski and because the Doctor received a small beacon that registered as Time Lord/Gallifreyan. Instead of a desert of ice, the duo encounter the new terraformed version of ISEN VI.
The story picks up quickly with wit, action and adventure, thanks to the writing of Robbie Morrison in this issue. The Doctor and Clara save a team of scientists from getting crushed to death; they control a small team of robots; and the Doctor offends the owner of the planet, Kano Dollar. Dollar is the richest human in the 25th century.
Dollar terraformed the ice planet without checking for further life signs -- at least, the Doctor points that out to him.
The Doctor, Clara and a team of scientists head to the core of the planet to follow the signal that the Doctor received in the beginning of the story. Before we get to learn what it is, something arises out of what looks like an old spaceship.
It says "Hyperios Rises. And the universe falls." The story will continue.
Similar to the "New Adventures of the Tenth Doctor," this too appears to be a continuing story over several comics, rather than something episodic. This "Doctor Who" is riveting; it would be disappointing if the story ended so quickly, but this issue moves fast. It has action, comedy, and terror.
Compared to the aforementioned 10th Doctor comic book, and the "New Adventures of the Eleventh Doctor," this issue sets itself apart by weaving material from Season 8 and the "Doctor Who" canon to tell an exhilarating story.
