The Powerball draw is scheduled for tonight, and a lucky winner could be the next multi-millionaire.
The jackpot prize for the national lottery has hit $70 million already, just a few weeks after someone won one of the highest Powerball pot prizes at $400 million.
The draw, happening at 10:59 p.m. ET, will offer the lottery winner an option to be paid in annuities or to bring home the pot prize through a cash option. Annuity payments are offered to winners over a 29-year period, with the pot prize being given in 30 payments. Winners also have the option to receive the winnings through cash, but a lower amount will be awarded for this option. For tonight's jackpot, the winner can bring home $40.1 million if received through the cash option.
Betters who want to join the lottery can purchase a $2 ticket from corresponding Powerball ticket retailers. Lotto players will than have nine chances of winning in the game. For a better to win the jackpot, he or she must match all five white balls drawn from a drum of 59 balls, and the red Powerball number drawn from 39 other red balls. Matching the five white balls will award $1 million. Other money prizes are $10,000, $100, $7 and $4.
While the ticketing and betting process is very easy, according to the Powerball official website, the odds of winning the jackpot prize is 1 in 175,223,510.00. Those who aim to at least bring home $1 million will have to beat the odds of 1 in 5,153,632.65.
Just this September, someone was able to beat these odds and bagged $400 million. The winning ticket was reportedly sold in South Carolina.
