Manager Joe Girardi has spent six seasons at the helm of the New York Yankees, but now the 48-year-old is about to be a free-agent and the Chicago Cubs have their eyes set on the Chicago-area native.

Girardi has won three division championships and a World Series Title during his time with the Yankees. He won manager of the year in his one season managing the Florida Marlins back in 2006.

Girardi made the best out of a 2013 campaign that saw a number of players go down with injuries. The Yankees missed the playoffs but still managed to have an 85-77 record.

However, with the Yankees missing the playoffs and Girardi being a free-agent, questions remain about whether the former Yankees catcher will return to the team or go elsewhere.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has indicated that the team does want Girardi back and hinted that they will likely give him a generous offer. Girardi made an average of $3 million per year in his most recent contract with the Yankees.

"I think [Girardi] likes it here. We're going to give him a real good reason to stay," Cashman said. "After tomorrow, I think I'll get a real good feel for where we're at."

According to CBS, Girardi met with Cashman earlier this week.

The Yankees have not indicated whether they will allow Cashman to negotiate with Chicago. He officially remains under contract with New York until Oct. 31.

"He is obviously under contract," Cashman said. "And we have an interest in clearly trying to keep him."
