Almost 600 flights have been cancelled as of midday Wednesday due to the snowstorm impacting the northeast of the U.S. Many of the flights were preemptively cancelled the day before in anticipation of the adverse weather, stranding thousands of holiday travelers.

The website FlightAware, which tracks flight cancellations and delays, reports that 595 flights within or outside of the U.S. had been cancelled as of this writing. The majority of the cancelled flights are by regional carriers like Air Wisconsin, Republic and ExpressJet. JetBlue is the mainstream carrier with the most cancelled flights at 38.

There are also 2,537 delayed flights. 

Most of the airports reporting cancelled incoming and outgoing flights are based in the northeast, including New York's LaGuardia, Newark's Libery and Reagan National in Washington, D.C.

According to USA Today, airlines and airports began cancelling flights Tuesday night, ahead of Wednesday's storm. The aforementioned airports, as well as New York's JFK, Boston's Logan, Westchester County, Hartford and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton cancelled flights in advance.

The tri-state area is expected to get more than six inches on Wednesday, and more delays and cancellations are expected as the day progresses.

"If your flight does get canceled and you find yourself an unexpected guest at the airport, we are going to do everything we can (to help)," LaGuardian General Manager Tom Brosco told the New York Post. "We will provide cots, pillows, blankets and other amenities to try to minimize your inconvenience and make it as comfortable as possible."

Brosco also asked travelers to check their flight's status before going to their respective airports.

According to NBC News, the storm has not affected Amtrak, which continues working and is "just busy," according to spokeswoman Kimberly Woods.

The Defense Department also said it would open up military airspace for commercial flights through Sunday to help move passengers fasters and alleviate any possible congestions.

FlightAware reports that as of now there are 21 cancelled flights for tomorrow within the U.S.
