The future of Girl Scout cookie sales is about to go digital.

Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) unveiled on Monday a new program called "Digital Cookie," the first national digital platform that was designed to expand and strengthen Girl Scouts' approach to the program's essential skill set.

The driving forces behind GSUSA say that this new platform will help the traditional Girl Scout Cookie Program evolve to fit the modern world. Among the goals of the new program are to provide girls with an important foundation in technology that will likely be vital to their experiences in school, business and in life as they move toward the future.

"For almost a century, the Girl Scout Cookie Program has been teaching girls to be leaders in the world of business and finance, and we intend to ensure that legacy continues in the digital age," said GSUSA CEO Anna Maria Chávez. "Digital Cookie is a game-changer for Girl Scouts, and a quantum leap forward in the evolution of the cookie program ... with an online sales experience that teaches skills like online marketing and ecommerce, all in a digital space."

"If you buy cookies online this year, you could be helping to prepare the next female leader of a global tech giant who changes the world forever," Chávez continued.

Depending on the market area where each Girl Scout Council or troop operates, cookie lovers will be able to buy product via two separate digital sales platforms.

Through one of these platforms, Girl Scouts will market their online cookie business by e-mailing potential customers with an invitation to visit their personalized cookie website. By clicking on the link sent in the e-mail, customers are able to browse the offerings and order cookies through the site from home, the office or anywhere they have computer access.

The other sales platform utilizes the customary face-to-face method of cookie sales that we've all come to know, but with a digital twist. Girl Scouts will be taking orders using a mobile app that has been programmed to allow for credit card processing and direct shipping. This platform also allows the girls to direct their customers to a non-personalized website where they can order cookies.

According to GSUSA, today's launch of Digital Cookie represents the first phase of a tech-friendly program that will progress over time. As further versions of the platform emerge, the result will be more robust customer interfaces and improved user experiences for both the Girl Scouts and the customer.

GSUSA says that the majority of the 112 Girl Scout councils nationwide will be participating in Digital Cookie during the 2014-2015 cookie season. Those councils not participating this year are all expected to be on-board by 2015.
