All three members of legendary hip-hop group De La Soul have reunited for their powerful single titled "The People."

The Long Island-based trio's forthright, horn-heavy track features a powerful guest appearance from Public Enemy frontman Chuck D. "Lyrically, Chuck brings a sense of authority and urgency. The power in his voice demands your attention," Trugoy told Rolling Stone. "It's a dream come true for us."

De La Soul touches on indifference in society and advocates unity - the song follows a grand jury's recent decision not to press charges against Ferguson, Missouri police officer Darren Wilson in the killing of teenager Michael Brown.

"The track's vibe was earnest and had a pressing tone to it," Trugoy added. "The lyrics are commentaries of our struggles and successes, our weaknesses and strengths... the experiences, trials and tribulations we have faced as human beings, a race and individuals."

The "3 Feet High and Rising" rappers' socially conscious anthem was originally scheduled to drop back in June, around the time Chuck D argued with New York radio station Hot 97's "The Morning Show" host Peter Rosenberg over hip-hop.

"We chose to hold off and not add fuel to any fires," Trugoy added. "Our next aim was for a Black Friday release. Coincidentally, the Ferguson tragedy took place and now the non-indictment verdict. Somehow this song was destined to be a part of something more than just dropping a joint. We hope it will lend itself to something positive in these difficult times."

It has been a decade since all three emcees teamed up for a studio album together. The follow-up to their 2004 "The Grind Date" will arrive in 2015. Check out De La Soul's "The People," which is currently available as a free download, below:
