Sam Smith Says He Came Out as Gay at 4 Years Old
During a recent interview with Ellen Degeneres, "I'm Not the Only One" singer, Sam Smith revealed that he informally "came out" as gay to his mother at the age of 4 years-old, the Huffington Post reports.
Following his coming out, Smith says that his mother revealed to him that she already knew that he was gay.
Smith's early coming out allowed him to publicly come out to his fans ahead of the release of his current hit album, "In the Lonely Hour," he explained.
"I kind of felt like I just had to mention it before I released my record ... If I did it afterwards, people probably would've thought I was lying just to sell records, which wasn't the case."
The Huffington Post reports that Smith first came out to the media back in May during an interview with The Fader.
At the time, he revealed that "In the Lonely Hour" detailed his experience with "a guy that I fell in love with last year, and he didn't love me back. I think I'm over it now, but I was in a very dark place. I kept feeling lonely in the fact that I hadn't felt love before. I've felt the bad things."
Now that some time has passed and Smith is no longer in that "dark place" he revealed to Degeneres his desire to be a spokesperson for all people including gay people, E! News reports.
"I'm a singer and a songwriter. I get upset sometimes because I don't talk about it too much," he shared on the "Ellen Degeneres Show." "People say, 'he doesn't want to be a spokesperson for the gay community.' I do, of course I do. I want to be a spokesperson for everyone. Ya know, straight people, gay people, bisexual. I don't want to be limited."
