'Once Upon a Time in Shaolin' Music: Did Skrillex Really Buy Wu-Tang Clan's $5 Million LP?
Skrillex addresses the claims that he had purchased Wu-Tang Clan's infamous $5 million LP, "Once Upon a Time in Shaolin."
It all started on Monday morning when a fan posted on a forum claiming that the EDM superstar was the new owner of the legendary hip-hop group's exclusive double record. Album producer Tarik "Cilvaringz" Azzougarh then fueled the rumor by responding with a simple "yup" on the message board.
Last month, Twipz premiered the action-packed music video for his "Recess" single titled "F--k That," which follows a foreign fighter who gets released from prison. In the cinematic visual, the NYC emcees' silver sonic masterpiece notably makes an appearance.
However, the Los Angeles-native DJ denied buying the one-of-a-kind album, tweeting: "nah RZA just brought it to the F--k That video shoot @ComplexMusic."
Similarly, Cilvaringz also cleared things up. "Bro, that was a joke, the album is not sold to Skrillex," he told Complex. "It's only in his new video for the song 'F--k That.' I would assume the sale of the album would be a grand official announcement, not a simple 'yup,' joking around with forum members we've been talking for years."
"Not sold at all," he added. "The 'yup' comment was a reply to the second post above, not to 'Skrillex buying the album.'"
RZA previously discussed his crew's top secret record, which only one copy has been made, back in March. "We're about to sell an album like nobody else sold it before," he told Forbes. "We're about to put out a piece of art like nobody else has done in the history of [modern] music. We're making a single-sale collector's item. This is like somebody having the scepter of an Egyptian king."
"The idea that music is art has been something we advocated for years," he added. "And yet, its doesn't receive the same treatment as art in the sense of the value of what it is, especially nowadays when it's been devalued and diminished to almost the point that it has to be given away for free."
