Jailbreaking your iPhone or iPad is popular among users, but the process of removing limitations on Apple's iOS operating system is not without risks.

And with third-party keyboards and widgets available in iOS 8, there may be less and less need to play this "cat-and-mouse" game with Apple in the first place, Gizmodo notes. This is particularly true because using "dodgy third-party software to jailbreak" may lead users to put their own devices at risk, the website warns.

But the most visible downside users experience with a jailbroken iPhone or iPad comes around whenever Apple releases a new version of iOS and they wish to upgrade their devices, according to Gotta Be Mobile. Such is the case for many owners now that the software giant has released iOS 8.1.1.

Those who used the "Pango" tool offered by the Chinese outfit TaiG to jailbreak their iOS 8.1.0 will find that upgrading to iOS 8.1.1 is not exactly straightforward. For regular Apple customers, all it requires is a trip to iTunes or "Settings," which allows for an over-the-air upgrade. But neither of those methods work for jailbroken devices.

Instead, Gotta Be Mobile explains, users would have to follow a three-step process: first, restore their devices; second, install the upgrade; and third, repeat the jailbreak if they wish to keep full control over their devices.

The last step is now possible thanks to TaiG, which released an iOS 8.1.1 jailbreak a few days ago, as Today's iPhone notes. This became necessary because "Pango" not only prevents Apple's devices from being updated, but also only works through the 8.1.0 version of its operating system.

TaiG's new jailbreak tool requires a Windows PC and some knowledge of Mandarin Chinese, but there are plenty of websites and YouTube videos that guide users who lack the necessary tech-savviness or language skills through the process.

If you are currently using iOS 8.1.0 on a jailbroken device, however, going through all of this trouble is hardly worth it "for such a minor update," according to Gotta Be Mobile. Particularly if you have an older iPhone or iPad, the device will not actually benefit from many of the changes in iOs 8.1.1, the site notes.

"However, if your iPhone or iPad isn't already jailbroken, now is the perfect time to update iOS to iOS 8.1.1,"  Gotta Be Mobile opines. "Then after you update, you can install the (TaiG) jailbreak."
