Sofia Vergara ALMA Awards Red Carpet: 'Cuchi-Cuchi' Thinks 'Sofia Vergara is Charo with Diarrhea'
The Spanish-American actress Charo came to fame during the time of flower power. She appeared on The Today Show and later on Laugh-In, exhibiting her thick accent, curvy figure, "cuchi-cuchi's" and charming personality.
The Colombian-born actress Sofia Vergara's career rose during the social media age. She first met American audiences in films like Big Trouble, Chasing Papi, and Soul Plane. The things that were most apparent about the actress were her buxom physique, her heavy accent and her quick wit.
So, seemingly, the two actresses have plenty in common.
But when questioned about the comparison, Charo reacted with a somewhat crude remark. "Sofia Vergara is Charo with Diarrhea," she said during a red carpet interview at the ALMA Awards on Sept 27.
Vergara responded to Charo's statement at the Machete Kills red carpet premiere on October 2, saying, "Of course she doesn't like it. No one likes being compared with someone else, especially someone younger."
Last year, Felix Sanchez, chairman and co-founder of the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts (NHFA) told the Huffington Post, "Sofia created an updated version of Charo, the 'cuchi-cuchi' 60s and 70s sexy and ditzy Latina persona."
That statement was made to address how Vergara's Modern Family role as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett did not merit an Emmy.
Vergara has since defended her character, explaining that the diversity of the Latina population, spanning 20 countries, is impossible to caricature and explained that these women have different personas and personal styles.
While both actresses have gotten grief about their occupational identities, both Vergara and Charo are multi-talented, career oriented women, who've had success in business, and they have both received acclaim in their respective fields.
