Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Amir Khan - Fight Rumors: 'No, None Yet' According to Robert Diaz - Report
Amir Khan's matchmaker clarified that there's no truth to the rumors the "King" is set to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May, according to The Guardian.
Robert Diaz, who serves as the chief matchmaker of Golden Boy Promotions (the company handling Khan's matches) clarified Saturday that no deal is being talked about regarding a bout between Mayweather Jr. and Khan. Diaz said, "I got a couple of emails on Wednesday and I said: 'What is this?' I have no knowledge of this, I haven't heard anything about this, I don't know where it is coming from. Really, I can't believe it. That subject hasn't even been brought up," reports The Guardian.
Meanwhile, Mayweather Jr.'s advisor also said that the match between the two fighters is merely rumors, according to the LA Times. Leonard Ellerbe, Floyd's advisor, said that, "Floyd just fought two weeks ago. Can't he take a vacation before someone anoints the next guy? I have no idea where this is coming from."
Rumors about a possible fight between Khan and Mayweather Jr. surfaced Thursday when the web went abuzz with details about the alleged match. According to the Daily Mail, "the official announcement will be made in the next few days and Khan has already pulled out of his challenge to world welterweight champion Devon Alexander, scheduled for December 7 in New York, to ensure that his dream fight with Mayweather is not jeopardised. Khan is being given this opportunity of a lifetime thanks to a conviction in America that his exceptional speed will present a unique test to Mayweather."
However, now that both camps have denied any shred of truth to the rumors, boxing fans will have to speculate anew.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. recently won his bout on September 14 against Mexican pride Saul "Canelo" Alvarez at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, maintaining a record of all wins and no losses, while Amir Khan won against Julio Diaz in April, after losing his belts to boxers Lamont Peterson in 2011 and to Danny Garcia in July this year.
