During the royal couple's whirlwind trip to the United States, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended their first-ever NBA basketball game in Brooklyn, New York Monday evening, where they met U.S. celebrity royalty, Beyoncé and Jay Z.

William and Kate sat courtside watching LeBron "King" James and the Cleveland Cavaliers triumph over the home team, the Brooklyn Nets. During a time out from play, the royals were greeted by Jay Z and Beyoncé.

The two Londoners rocked American chic at the game, with William sporting a blue and red plaid shirt and Kate keeping warm in a gray coat by designer Tory Burch and skinny jeans, The Guardian reports.

Their attendance also marks a newly formed partnership between charitable works that both parties support.

The NBA will support the duke's cause, United For Wildlife foundation, as well as the Coach Core program, which aims to foster more sports coaches in communities. For the first half of the game, the royal couple dined with NBA executives in a private boardroom to discuss the partnership.

NBA stars and legends Dikembe Mutombo, Serge Ibaka and Al Horford were named ambassadors of United For Wildlife. 

"At last I'm standing next to someone who's taller than me," Prince William said as he posed for a picture next to the 7-foot-2-inch Mutombo.

The royal couple's visit also coincided with the ongoing protests in New York over the death of Eric Garner, who was killed after being put in a chokehold by police. As the two were ushered to Brooklyn before the start of the game, protesters held a "die-in" outside the Barclays Center to show outrage at a grand jury's decision not to indict a police officer responsible for Garner's death.

While unrest has somewhat quieted since the fallout from the grand jury decision, the royal's three-day trip to the city still shows some of the disgruntled groups' frustration.

In a show of solidarity, James warmed up for the game in a T-shirt that read, "I Can't Breathe," Garner's final words.
