Golden Globe Nominations 2015: 'Birdman' Leads Nominations with Seven; Is it the Oscar Front-runner?
The Golden Globe nominations have been announced with "Birdman" leading the nominees.
The Hollywood Foreign Press is known as one of the most important precursor awards, as many of the Golden Globe nominees end up getting nominated for the Academy Awards.
"Birdman" was nominated in the Best Musical or Comedy category and is the frontrunner to win it. The film was nominated alongside "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "Into the Woods." Surprising in the category were "Pride" and "St. Vincent."
In the Best Dramatic Picture category, "Boyhood," "Selma," "Foxcatcher," "The Imitation Game" and "The Theory of Everything" were nominated.
The best director category saw Wes Anderson for "The Grand Budapest Hotel" surprise and was nominated alongside the other surprise, David Fincher, for his film "Gone Girl." Interestingly enough, "Gone Girl" was not nominated for Best Picture. Ava DuVernay was nominated for "Selma" with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for "Birdman" and Richard Linklater for "Boyhood."
In the Best Dramatic Actress category, Julianne Moore led the race for her performance in "Still Alice," with Rosamund Pike for her work in "Gone Girl" and Felicity Jones in "The Theory of Everything." Reese Witherspoon was also nominated for her performance in "Wild" as was Jennifer Aniston for "Cake."
In the Best Dramatic Actor race, Benedict Cumberbatch was nominated for his performance in "The Imitation Game" with Steve Carell in "Foxcatcher" and Eddie Redmayne in "The Theory of Everything." Jake Gyllenhaal rounded out the nominees for his performance in "Nightcrawler" along with David Oyelowo for his work in "Selma."
The Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy saw Amy Adams nominated for "Big Eyes," Emily Blunt for "Into the Woods" and Helen Mirren for "The Hundred Foot Journey." Julianne Moore rounded out the nominees for her work in "Map to the Stars" while Quvenzhane Wallis was nominated for her performance in "Annie."
Ralph Fiennes was shortlisted for his performance in "The Grand Budapest Hotel" in the Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy category alongside Michael Keaton for "Birdman," Bill Murray for "St. Vincent," Joaquin Phoenix for "Inherent Vice" and Christoph Waltz for "Big Eyes."
The foreign film race had a number of surprises. While frontrunners "Ida," "Force Majeure" and "Leviathan" were nominated, Oscar dark horses "Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem" and "Tangerines" were shortlisted.
The Golden Globe awards will be presented on Jan. 11, 2015, the week before the Oscar nominations are announced.
