Puerto Rican Star Gina Rodriguez Nominated for Golden Globe
It's been a whirlwind year for Gina Rodriguez.
On top of being praised for her inspirational messages about the Latino community, the star has also been recognized for her talent as an actress. On Thursday, Rodriguez was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series, Comedy.
The 30-year-old star of Puerto Rican descent is going up against Lena Dunham, Edie Falco, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Taylor Schilling. Despite facing off with women who are on very well established shows, Newsday believes she stands a chance in this category.
"...and HFPA likes to sometimes discover breakouts ahead of the Emmys, and they certainly have done so with Rodriguez of 'Jane the Virgin.' Let's call her the nominee to beat," the publication wrote.
Meanwhile, Rodriguez is ecstatic over the nomination.
On top of retweeting articles that mention her accomplishment, she has also written a message to the Golden Globes.
".@goldenglobes Thank you seems too small, will you marry isn't appropriate, I love you is true maybe too soon but you did have me at hello," she said.
In October, TV Guide named Rodriguez its fall breakout star. The publication called her the "most refreshing" and "inspiring" actress. TV Guide went on to say that after speaking to her, it was clear that she was going to be a big name in Hollywood.
"For me, I've always known that if this was something I was going to go into with seriousness, then as an artist, I have a responsibility," she said. "...I do stand here for all the young girls, regardless of their skin color, I sit here for all the Latina girls born in American who speak both English and Spanish -- or for the girls that don't speak Spanish but are expected to speak Spanish -- I stand here for all of those categories I fit into to say, 'If I can do it, you can do it. If I can follow my dreams, you can follow your dreams. If I can do this with respect and integrity and morality you can too.'"
The Daily Beast said that it's difficult not to compare Rodriguez to fellow Latina America Ferrera. The Honduran actress was on "Ugly Betty," which aired on ABC, but "Jane the Virgin" is on CW. The website added that the CW is not "typically taken seriously by awards groups."
