Liverpool Transfer Rumors: Raheem Sterling Turns Down Extension; Will He Leave Club?
Liverpool Football Club wanted to sign Raheem Sterling to a new deal, but the two sides failed to find a common ground, leading to rumors suggesting that the midfielder will leave the club when he gets an opportunity.
Sterling, who has tallied three goals and four assists in 15 Barclays Premier League games this season, still has more than two years left in his contract, but Liverpool recently tried to lock him up to a long-term extension.
According to Sky Sports, Liverpool offered a deal where Sterling's weekly salary will increase from £30,000 to £70,000, but the 20-year-old midfielder and his representatives turned down the deal.
But as far as Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is concerned, he is not worried about Sterling's uncertain future with the club, pointing out that the England international is happy at Anfield.
"I think if you look at Raheem's performances that is what will do the talking," Rodgers said. "I think you see at the moment he is very happy. He is at a club that he loves being at. He enjoys playing here. He has obviously been given an opportunity as a young player."
When asked about the stalled contract talks between Sterling and the club, Rodgers expressed confidence that the two sides will eventually reach a new deal to secure the youngster's future.
"It's between the club and his representatives to sort out a deal but certainly there has been no unhappiness," Sterling said. "I know Raheem very well and I see him training and playing. At this moment in time, you can he is happy so I am sure that will get sorted out in time."
Sterling, who moved to Liverpool from Queens Park Rangers' youth academy in 2010, said in an interview last month he is planning to stay at the club, citing Rodgers' role in developing him as a more complete and matured player over the past four years.
"I am happy to be here for as long as possible," Sterling said via ESPN UK. "The manager gave me an opportunity and I would like to think I have taken it. Hopefully I can be an example to some of the other kids here now, I am proof that Liverpool have a manager who does give young players a chance."
