'Suicide Squad' 2016 Movie Members and Release Date: 'How to Get Away with Murder's' Viola Davis Reportedly Cast as Amanda Waller
Oscar-nominated actress Viola Davis, who is currently starring in the Shonda Rhimes legal drama "How to Get Away with Murder," may have been cast in the role of Amanda Waller, the no-nonsense, hard-hitting, top-ranking U.S. Government agent and businesswoman-turned-congressional aide who heads the Suicide Squad in the upcoming "Suicide Squad" movie.
Latino-Review reports unofficial sources say the two-time Tony Award-winning actress is reportedly close to signing on the project. The only obstacle is settling concerns about her busy schedule with the hit NBC TV series she's currently headlining on Thursday nights.
Provided she does complete negotiations, Davis will have beat out Academy Award-winner Octavia Spencer (Davis' co-star in 2011's "The Help") and the "Queen of All Media" herself, Oprah Winfrey (also an Academy Award nominee), who were both rumored to be in consideration for the role.
Highly trained in logistics, strategic management, military tactics, game theory and espionage, the character of Amanda "The Wall" Waller has been ranked 60th on IGN's "Greatest Comic Book Villain of All Time" list, observing her usual cut-throat tactics to get results as the reason.
Waller, who doesn't possess any powers of her own, micromanages the coterie of supervillains, who have been given a chance to earn their freedom by going on secret missions that have a good chance of getting them killed in action.
In recent years, the character has been significantly adapted in both animated and live action media, being voiced by actors C. C. H. Pounder ("Justice League Unlimited," "Superman/Batman: Public Enemies" and "Batman: Assault on Arkham") and Sheryl Lee Ralph ("Young Justice"), and has been portrayed in live action by Pam Grier ("Smallville"), Angela Bassett ("Green Lantern") and Cynthia Addai-Robinson ("Arrow").
A veteran actress in the sci-fi and fantasy genres, Davis previously appeared in films including 2002's "Solaris," 2013's "Beautiful Creatures" and 2014's "Ender's Game."
Directed by David Ayer, best known as the writer of "Training Day" and the director of critically-acclaimed films "End of Watch" and "Fury," the 2016 superhero spy thriller "Suicide Squad" is shaping up to be the most anticipated action-filled blockbuster of the year. It helps that it boasts an all-star cast that includes Will Smith as Deadshot, Jared Leto as Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Tom Hardy as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress.
