'The Vampire Diaries' Season 6 Spoilers: EP Tease Flashbacks of Elena and Damon's 'Honeymoon Period' in Episode 11, 'Woke Up With a Monster?' [Watch]
"Delena" fans will be in for a real treat when "The Vampire Diaries" returns to The CW next year.
As "The Vampire Diaries" fans may recall, towards the end of the midseason finale, Damon opened his front door to find Elena standing underneath his mistletoe. However, just when it seemed like Damon found a way to get a kiss, Elena disappeared. It turned out that Kai put a cloaking spell on her and knocked her out with a pipe.
Although many viewers were disappointed that Kai interrupted a potentially romantic moment for the former couple, executive producer Caroline Dries revealed the two will reunite and go through a "honeymoon period" later on in the season.
"Elena is consciously making a decision to confront her feelings for Damon," Caroline Dries told Alloy Entertainment in a recent interview. "When we first got them together at the end of Season 4 and they kissed in front of the fireplace, we then cut to three months later. They experienced a whole chunk of time together that we didn't see -- sort of the honeymoon period of a new boyfriend/girlfriend relationship. ... what we were excited about doing with their relationship and interested in playing around a bit with were those initial stages. ... basically all those things we didn't get to see the first time around -- but, all in all, it'll be fun to watch."
The epic midseason finale also revealed that Caroline's mom, Sheriff Liz Forbes, was diagnosed with cancer.
According to Dries, the writers decided to incorporate a terminal illness into the show to mix things up.
"Our show is all about death -- trying to prevent death, avoiding death, and beating death," she explained. "Then, all of a sudden you get this very human illness and it's like, 'Oh! What do we do now?' Currently there is no obvious cure for the Sheriff's cancer, and that was the whole point of doing this now and having it be a curveball in the middle of the season."
She also hinted that the vampires will consider using vampire blood to cure Liz.
"We know that the obvious thing to do would be to cure Liz with vampire blood, so that's what we're going to do in 'The Vampire Diaries' [Season 6, Episode 11]," Dries said. "We're going to make that an option. Our characters are going to discuss the pros and cons of healing Liz the supernatural way, and they're going to have different opinions on this matter."
In the meantime, Caroline is going to deal with watching her mother go through cancer the best way she can.
"Caroline at heart is a control freak and being a vampire has made her an even bigger control freak," Dries said. "So when you tell a control freak, 'Here's something you have absolutely no power over and there's no solution for it,' she's not going to accept that. Caroline is going to try to take matters into her own hands, and there will be some interesting consequences."
Dries also dropped spoilers about what to expect from Kai.
"Kai has never really had that much access to magic or even had that much power coursing through his veins. So, he's going to experience a few growing pains of his own as he realizes that he might have bit off more than he can chew," she explained. "As for our guys, even though they got to return home to Mystic Falls -- which is kind of the silver lining of Kai sucking up the magic from the border -- this doesn't bode well for them. It's not good to have the villain of the show, who's a total sociopath and literally has not even an ounce of empathy in his body, with so much power. And so Kai's goal right now is the same one since the beginning: to merge with Jo, and he's hell-bent on making sure this happens."
In wake of the upcoming episode, which is titled "Woke Up with a Monster," The CW released an extended promo that shows Stefan telling Enzo that Sarah Salvatore is alive. Watch it below.
Season 6, Episode 11 of "The Vampire Diaries," titled "Woke Up With a Monster," will premiere on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
