Freddie Roach is hoping that the awaited showdown between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. will finally happen next year and give boxing fans the fight that they have been asking for for the past several years.

For the Hall of Fame trainer, however, one fight may not be enough to determine who the better fighter is. Roach said both camps should consider signing a multi-fight deal, which could eventually lead to a trilogy between Pacquiao and Mayweather.

"Doing a multi-fight contract, I thought that was the best idea in the world," Roach told The Fight Game via BoxingScene. "I would love to see these guys fight more than once. If they split the first two, we could have a third, there could be a rubber match. We could have three big fights. It's been done before, it could be done again."

Mayweather, who is coming off two consecutive victories against Marcos Maidana earlier this year, recently called Pacquiao out, saying that he wants to face the Filipino boxing icon on Cinco de Mayo weekend on May 2 next year.

Roach is hoping that Mayweather will truly agree to face Pacquiao next year in fair fight terms. The veteran trainer said that Mayweather's legacy will be ruined if he retires with an unbeaten record without facing Pacquiao.

"He is so in love with that zero on that record," Roach said of Mayweather. "That's the thing with boxing, if you are champion of the world you fight everybody, you don't duck anybody and you fight all comers. If he retires not fighting Manny, that will be a big question when he's asked for things. I think that will ruin his legacy."

Previous negotiations for the potential record-breaking showdown went down as both fighters did not give into each other's demands in terms of fight purse and drug testing.

Roach admitted that they were the reason why the first negotiation for the fight did not come into fruition because Pacquiao did not agree to the random blood testing, thinking that it would make him weak before the fight.

But since then, Roach said that Mayweather has not shown willingness to face Pacquiao. The Hall of Famer said that they even offered a 60-40 split in revenue in favor of Mayweather, but the reigning pound-for-pound king turned it down.
