The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly considering Rex Ryan for their coaching vacancy, while the New York Jets are eyeing Doug Marrone, who surprisingly decided to leave the Buffalo Bills.

Multiple reports confirmed the 49ers are scheduled to interview Ryan, who is reportedly one of the top candidates to become San Francisco's next head coach after parting ways with Jim Harbaugh on Sunday.

Ryan was recently fired by the Jets after failing to lead the team to the playoffs for the past four seasons. Sources said, though, the 49ers were impressed with the way Ryan led the Jets to two straight AFC Championship games in his first two seasons in New York.

However, according to Sporting News, Ryan's reputation of being a defensive-minded coach could hurt his chances of landing the 49ers job because the team might eventually hire an offensive-oriented coach to help quarterback Colin Kaepernick improve his game moving forward.

Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase was also mentioned as a strong favorite to become the 49ers next head coach should their top executives decide to go for an offense-first coach.

Sources added that the 49ers also asked permission from Arizona Cardinals to interview Todd Bowles and from the Seattle Seahawks to talk to Dan Quinn.

49ers general manager Trent Baalke also reached out to Super Bowl-winning coach Mike Shanahan on Tuesday, but it remains unclear at this point whether or not the former Broncos coach will have a formal interview for the 49ers coaching job.

Meanwhile, the New York Post reported that the Jets have already begun the process of finding Ryan's replacement.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Jets owner Woody Johnson, who also fired general manager John Idzik earlier this week, might name a new coach soon.

Previous reports indicated that Johnson wants to hire a general manager first, but the plan could be shelved after Doug Marrone became available following the veteran coach's decision to opt out of his deal with the Bills.

Marrone, who led the Bills to a respectable 9-7 finish this season, is reportedly on top of Johnson's list of coaching candidates, but hiring the 50-year-old coach will be easier said than done. Sources said that at least four other teams are eyeing Marrone this offseason.
