T-Mobile to Pass Sprint in 2015, Says CEO Legere
The new year is barely off to a start, and it looks like T-Mobile has set some lofty goals for itself. According to CEO and president John Legere, the nation's fourth-largest carrier will be making some serious strides against competitors in 2015.
In a blog post outlining his predictions for the new year, Legere came out saying that 2015 will be when T-Mobile finally moves up a notch in the wireless carrier race.
"T-Mobile will -- officially -- become the No. 3 wireless company in America in 2015. This summer, I said we'd blow by Sprint by the end of 2014 to become the No. 3 wireless company in the U.S.," wrote Legere. "They have been swinging the bat since I made that statement, so we won't know where things stand until we get the final score after we both report Q4 earnings, but whether it is now -- or soon -- I'm telling you, it's a done deal!"
This claim, however bold, may have some credibility to it. T-Mobile has been making steady gains against its closest competitor over the past few years, and last year T-Mobile even passed Sprint in the number of prepaid customers. Overall, Sprint still holds the edge, although the company is on a downward trend.
Legere went further, pointing out faults in competitors, stating, "The competition will continue to bumble along."
According to Legere, "AT&T will find new ways to cause their customers pain. ... Sprint will continue throwing out campaigns, offers and promotions -- anything to see if it sticks. ... Verizon will keep trying to baffle American wireless customers with BS promos."
Legere also claims that T-Mobile will go toe-to-toe with Verizon's network almost anywhere in the country and come out on top. T-Mobile's network covers 264 million Americans, while Verizon's covers 303 million. According to Legere, T-Mobile's speeds come out on top, although we can see that isn't always the case. In fact, T-Mobile's rural coverage is severely lacking compared to Verizon thanks to Big Red having a more robust low-frequency spectrum infrastructure. This one seems unlikely to come true, especially as almost every network is upgrading their LTE networks for even faster speeds.
Wearables will also play a major role in 2015, says Legere. This one seems highly likely, especially given the imminent arrival of Apple's Watch. Oh, and there will be more Un-carrier moves this year, naturally.
