Demi Lovato, a Latina Role Model, Kicks Off 2015 With Positive Body Image After Overcoming Eating Disorder, Drug & Alcohol Addiction
How have you kicked off 2015?
Singer/ songwriter Demi Lovato is kicking off the New Year by loving herself, loving her body and living a healthier lifestyle -- a lesson that many 20-somethings like herself should learn and master.
"You don't have to wait till the beginning of a new year to make resolutions for yourself," Lovato said on Instagram. "It's all about loving and taking care of the only body you will ever have... Cherish it, love it, embrace it.. Because when you do.. It begins to show. Goodbye 2014.. Who's excited for what we can accomplish in 2015?!! Let's do this!!!!"
It hasn't been easy for Lovato to get to this point, however; it's been a long road to recovery, but she's proving you can get there if you try.
The 22-year-old former Disney star and "X Factor" judge has learned a lot at her young age after overcoming an eating disorder (she entered treatment for bulimia in 2010 and admitted to a relapse this summer, according to PEOPLE), but she's now embracing and loving her body. She has also overcome a drug and alcohol addiction.
Last year, the "X Factor" judge revealed the dark details of her drug addiction to cocaine during the culmination of her teenage years with the media, but admits that she might have revealed too much.
The former Disney's Camp Rock star admitted that she couldn't go 30 minutes without cocaine and even took to smuggling it on airplanes.
"I've really never talked about this stuff before ... I don't know if I should be sharing this," she told Access Hollywood's Kit Hoover in an earlier interview.
Lovato also said that her addiction made her "a manipulator and a liar," and that she was able to "hide her drug abuse even from trained minders."
"I couldn't go 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine and I would bring it on airplanes," she admitted. "I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep and I would do it right there. I'd sneak to the bathroom and I'd do it ... And that was even with somebody [with me], I had a sober companion, somebody who was watching me 24/7 and living with me [and] I was able to hide it from them as well."
Now clean, back on track, healthy and in love (she is reportedly dating El Rey's "From Dusk Till Dawn's" Wilmer Valderrama), Lovato is an inspiration to her fans from the U.S. to around the world and she is encouraging them to life a healthy lifestyle.
On Instagram, she posted a before-and-after photo of her healthy weight loss this past year.
"I was beautiful then, and I'm beautiful now," she wrote on her Instagram post. "2014 I decided to focus on bettering myself by making changes in my life with health, balance, endurance and consistency."
In an earlier interview in 2014, Lovato credited fellow celebrities who have embraced their curves.
"I really credit women like Beyonce and Kim Kardashian... [they] completely revolutionized what our generation's view of perception of what beautiful is and I really think that they had a huge impact on that. You can think whatever you want about the Kardashians, but they really did help tons of women feel comfortable in their own skin and I like to carry that message on," Demi told Access Hollywood.
"Look at J.Lo, look at Scarlett Johansson, Sophia Vergara, Beyonce - who I don't really consider human, she is more like a goddess - they have amazing figures it's more realistic and achievable," she added.
Lovato penned her memoir, "Staying Strong: 365 Days a Year," and has now become a role model for her strength for overcoming her addictions as well as a philanthropist for Voto Latino, anti-bullying and mental health campaigns.
