The St. Louis Rams could return to Los Angeles in 2016 as reports revealed team owner Stan Kroenke is planning to build an NFL stadium in Inglewood, California.

Kroenke bought 60 acres of land in Inglewood last year and Los Angeles Times confirmed the Rams owner has already talked to Hollywood Park site owners, Stockbridge Capital Group, about the possibility of building a stadium to house the team in as early as 2016.

Kroenke and Stockbridge Capital Group are reportedly planning to build an 80,000-seat stadium, a 6,000-seat performance venue and a 300-room hotel along with retail, residential and office spaces.

Kroenke and his partners are reportedly determined to bring the NFL team back to Los Angeles, which lost both the Rams and the Raiders after the 1994 season.

Previous attempts to bring an NFL team back to the city did not come to fruition, but the Inglewood developers are confident the plan will push through because there will be no tax dollars involved in the construction of the stadium and related establishments.

According to ESPN, the developers will gather signatures for the "City of Champions Revitalization Project" in order to get the project on the Inglewood municipal ballot this year.

"We are excited to unveil an expanded plan that will bring a world-class sports and entertainment district to Hollywood Park," Stockbridge founder Terry Fancher said in a statement. "We are committed to working with [the Kroenke Group] to build a project that will put Inglewood back on the map as home of the truly great sports and entertainment venues."

Reacting on the reports about the proposed relocation to Los Angeles, the NFL said no team has made a request for relocation. Application for relocation should be approved by at least 24 of the 32 NFL clubs to take into effect, the league also announced.

Civic leaders, including Missouri governor Jay Nixon, vowed to work hard to keep the Rams in St. Louis. Nixon said they are determined to show St. Louis deserves to have continued NFL membership.

"St. Louis is an NFL city and I am committed to keeping it that way," Nixon said via Fox Sports. "I look forward to reviewing the recommendations from Dave Peacock and Bob Blitz later this week and working with the St. Louis community to put forward a plan that's consistent with our principles of protecting taxpayers."
