Pacific Rim Sequel Confirmed: Director Guillermo Del Toro Already Writing Next Movie in Series
Guillermo Del Toro, writer and director of the box office smash hit Pacific Rim, is at it again. Reports have indicated that Del Toro is already busily writing the follow up to the incredible robots vs. monsters feature with screenwriter Travis Beacham.
Pacific Rim, a film that pays homage to giant monster films like The Beast from 20,000, Gamera, Fathoms and Godzilla, was an expensive production. The film which starred Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day employed a $190 million production budget through Warner Bros., but made more than twice that in box office sales, earning approximately $407,591,372 worldwide. Pacific Rim was the highest grossing-action film based on new intellectual property this year.
The decision to green light the action follow-up lies with Legendary Entertainment or Warner Bros., (who've split since the film was made). The only doubts that the studios may have lies in the fact that the Pacific Rim didn't perform as well as the studios would have liked domestically, but the film fared incredibly well overseas.
Del Toro's sequel would further explore and flesh out the Pacific Rim universe.
Nearly one hundred Kaijus and one hundred Jaegers were designed for the film but only a small portion appeared. Del Toro has only scratch the surface of what the Pacific Rim world has to offer, as he was barely was to conquer some of the world's unique challenges, or utilize all of his influences and ideas for the film.
While speaking to IGN to promote the Blu-ray release of Pacific Rim, he confirmed that his pen was busy writing the follow up. "We are writing the sequel. Travis Beacham and I are writing, so that is active. The decision to greenlight or not, that's definitely above my pay rate," Del Toro stated. "People that love it, love it with great passion. So I would love to continue telling stories about that world."
