Rapper Pitbull Opens Charter School for Young Scholars Seeking Careers in Sports
Pitbull has changed up his M.O. He's taken time away from club remixes and guest appearances on dance tracks in order to dedicate it to a more worthy cause, education. The Cubano rapper is opening a sports education charter school in his hometown, Miami, Florida. The Sports Leadership and Management school, or SLAM for short, is a school that prepares young scholars for a career in the sports field.
Pitbull, 32, was the keynote speaker at 2013 National Charter Schools Conference, and he shared his thoughts on the importance of education, and how it encourages self-improvement. He also offered thoughts on schooling and sports education to the Washington Post, which attended.
"Sports is something that gives you discipline. It shows you what it is to work hard and go out there every day. The more you practice the better you get. What I say about sports is that it's not just about athletes. Go back and it can be therapists, broadcasters, attorneys. Anything that can engage them, as far as them wanting to learn," Pitbull said, and also added, "Sometimes what happens is education is no longer sexy, it's no longer cool," he said. "I want to help put together curriculums in school where it does entertain them, engage them and one way or another just makes it fun again."
Mr. Worldwide credited important teachers and his mother for his respect for education. He spoke of a teacher by the name of Ms. Martinez who taught him to believe in himself; and, he stated that his mother once told him, "Two of the most dangerous diseases in the world are ignorance and greed. That's why we have to educate."
SLAM will be run by Mater Academy and Academia, a non-profit national charter school management company. The publicly funded school will offer free or low-cost tuition to its students. SLAM's doors will open to new students this coming Saturday.
