Ryan Murphy, Glee's co-creator, announced on Wednesday, Oct. 15 that next season will be the final season of the hit show.

At an FX Network Celebration, Murphy confirmed to TVLine's Michael Ausiello that the Fox Network dramatic romcom would stop after its sixth season, which will undoubtedly leave "Gleeks" in tears. Murphy also indicated that Cory Monteith's (who portrayed Finn Hudson) death will change the preconceived ending for the show.

"The final year of the show, which will be next year, was designed around Rachel and Cory/Finn's story. I always knew that, I always knew how it would end," Murphy told TVLine. "I knew what the last shot was, he was in it. I knew what the last line was, she said it to him. So when a tragedy like that happens you sort of have to pause and figure out what you want to do, so we're figuring that out now."

Monteith, who died of a drug overdose in July, held the lead male role on the series. His death was resolved in the episode entitled "The Quarterback," which served as a tribute to both Cory Monteith and his character Finn Hudson. The cause of Finn Hudson's death is intentionally not mentioned.

"I'm going to tell the studio and the network [in a week] how after Cory's unfortunate passing we can end the show that I think is very satisfactory," he explained. "And kind of in his honor, which I love."

The news of Glee's closure comes on the tail of a double renewal by Fox in April, just prior to Monteith's death.

Glee, an overnight success, featured a group of misfits and outcasts who simply wanted to belong, and found a new family and a new life in the Glee club and its members.
