Consumer Electronics Show 2015: VW Unveils Concept Car With All Touchscreen Interface
LAS VEGAS - In 2007 Apple got rid of the buttons on our phones, and here at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show VW wants to get rid of the buttons in our cars. Volkswagen unveiled their concept for the car of the near-future sporting an all-touchscreen interface.
The Golf R Touch features a number of screens allowing users to control most features in their vehicle via touch. The first of them is a 12.8-inch main screen that will give access to all the infotainment features in the car, along with an 8-inch screen directly underneath it for climate control.
The dashboard where the normal instrument panel would go has been replaced by a 12.3-inch widescreen display that will give users speed, gas, heat and other standard vehicle information.
While Tesla already features a large touch screen interface in its main console, VW is hoping to take it once step further with gesture control. If you hold up your open hand inside the vehicle for two seconds, you will be given the option to control every feature simply by gesture. The screens will also have features like quickly controlling the volume by sliding anywhere with a certain number of fingers. Much like scrolling currently on a Mac or iOS device.
At this point, the Volkswagen Golf R Touch is merely a concept car, giving a glimpse at VW's image of the automotive future. VW is hoping that soon all cars will have cameras inside them that will allow drivers to control most functions of the car without even glancing at an instrument panel or touching anything at all. This is mainly how they are getting around the issue that more touch screens could mean more distracted drivers.
As the vehicle is a prototype, there is no word from Volkswagen on when we can expect them to bring a vehicle like this to production, but we can't wait.
