Fifty Shades of Grey Movie Casting Rumors 2013: E.L. James Confirms Jamie Dornan as New Christian Grey, Twitter Reacts
Fifty Shades of Grey author E.L. James has confirmed that Jamie Dornan will replace Charlie Hunnam as Christian Grey in the novel's movie adaptation.
Yesterday, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Dornan was undergoing negotiations to play opposite Dakota Johnson as Christian Grey, a kinky businessman who seduces Johnson's Anastasia Steele with S&M and a sculpted body. Last night, James confirmed the news.
"Stow your twitchy palms ladies... our man is here. Welcome to #TeamFifty @JamieDornan1 x," James said via Twitter.
Last time an actor was announced as Christian Grey, fans were outraged. They even created a petition demanding Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel as the leads instead. This time around, however, there are not any petitions. In fact, Twitter users seem to be excited about Dornan stepping into the business slacks that Hunnam left behind.
"@E_L_James @JamieDornan1 squeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!! Good choice my lady !!! You did good :)," one user tweeted in response to James.
"@E_L_James @JamieDornan1 OH.MY.GOOOOD!! Greyt news! He's perfect for the role!! We. Love. You!!!" another Twitter user said.
Even celebrities seem to be pleased with the decision.
"RT if you are excited for the '50 Shades of Grey' movie starring @JamieDornan1!" Crystal Hefner, Hugh Hefner's Playmate wife, tweeted Thursday.
"I'm a monstrous @JamieDornan1 fan. Wasn't allowed to be attracted to him on The Fall bc he played a sexmurderer. 50 Shades is my big chance!" Lena Dunham said via Twitter.
On the other hand, 50 percent of Entertainmentwise readers say that they are unhappy, and Dornan was not what they expected. Twenty-five percent of readers approved of Dornan, while 14 percent are waiting to see the film before making any judgment calls.
On Monday, producer Michael De Luca explained how important it was to have a "fresh face" as the new Christian Grey.
Dornan certainly fits the criteria with only a few acting credits to his name. The new Christian Grey first gained fame as an underwear model for Calvin Klein. His modeling career took off with spreads for Armani, Christian Dior and Aquacutum.
The model then made the switch to acting in 2006 with a small role alongside Kirsten Dunst in Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette. From 2011 until 2013, Dorman played Sheriff Graham in ABC's "Once Upon a Time." The model-turned-actor then confirmed his acting legitimacy by playing a serial killer in "The Fall," a BBC drama.
You may also recognize Dornan from his relationship with Keira Knightley. The pair dated from 2003 until 2005, Telegraph reports.
"I feel like everyone has an idea of what these characters look like and sound like, so to present the world with fresh faces, where no pre-conceived notions or baggage come with it, is best," De Luca told Los Angeles Times.
Fifty Shades of Grey will be released Aug. 1, 2014.
