Shakira Hosts Baby Shower for Whole World; Check Out Her Gift Registry to See What ‘Inspired’ Gifts She’s Asking You For
Songstress extraordinaire Shakira and boyfriend Gerard Pique are looking forward to welcoming their second child into the world soon and have taken to the Internet to make the upcoming baby shower a worldwide event -- and you're invited!
The Colombian bombshell, 37, and soccer star boy toy Pique, 27, announced on Monday plans to host a "World Baby Shower" in collaboration with UNICEF as part of the organization's "Inspired Gifts" program. The upcoming shower will be similar to one thrown for the birth of their first son, Milan.
"Two years ago, Gerard and I had the idea of putting together a different kind of baby shower," Shakira posted on Facebook on Monday. "We wanted to give something to other parents and babies around the world, who live in conditions of extreme poverty and vulnerability but whose lives can be improved greatly by small contributions from others."
In 2013 Shakira reached out to UNICEF to launch a special campaign for her first shower in which guests were asked to buy "inspired" gifts comprised of life-saving items to help other babies around the world survive and thrive, the singer said.
According to the official World Baby Shower website, for 2-year-old Milan's shower, guests and others who contributed to the UNICEF registry helped deliver tons (literally) of life-saving gifts. They included 3.8 tons of therapeutic food that saved children from malnutrition, 80,000 polio vaccines, 200,000 oral rehydration salt sachets, over 1,000 mosquito nets to protect children from malaria and over 150 portable scales to weigh babies and toddlers that helped with the early detection of malnutrition and illness.
"Now that we're expecting our second child, we want to invite other expectant parents to host their own World Baby Shower," Shakira wrote on the official site. "You don't have to be a celebrity to make a difference -- the birth of your child can be a blessing that also saves thousands of children's lives around the world."
Shakira and Pique have made it easy for anybody to set up their own World Baby Shower through the site. Expectant mothers can visit the website and click on the "Host A Shower" tab, where they are given instructions on how to set up their own shower page and how to spread the word about their newly created charitable registry, via e-mail and social media.
Shakira has also posted on the main site a registry for her own looming shower, where fans worldwide can purchase much-needed items at a range of prices.
For around $10, Shakira's World Baby Shower supporters can purchase a polio or measles vaccine. A bit more expensive, but not by much -- first aid kits are available in the $30 range. Moving on up the price scale, but still reasonable, therapeutic food can be bought for $72. A little more than double that amount, $180 will buy a basic family water kit. And for supporters with deeper pockets than most, a midwifery kit costs just under $2,000.
"Every baby deserves the best possible and because we all can, we all should help...Please join us!" Shakira wrote on Facebook. "Let's make the arrival of our new babies a blessing to us, our families, and to many others as well. Thanks for your support -- we can't wait to hear about you and your baby shower and to celebrate together."
