"The Vampire Diaries" will be intense when the show returns from its winter hiatus Thursday night.

As fans may recall, the midseason finale concluded with Kai gaining access to magic and kidnapped Elena and Sheriff Liz Forbes being diagnosed with cancer.

In the next episode, which is titled "Woke Up with a Monster," Damon will do all he can to rescue Elena from Kai, while Enzo will continue waging war against Stefan. Liv and Alaric will also try to help Jo become stronger in preparation to her merge with Kai. Meanwhile, Caroline will go on a desperate search for a cancer cure for her mother.

During an interview with E! News, executive producer Julie Plec opened up about Stefan and Caroline's relationship, and the potential that the two will become more than friends.

"Obviously, Caroline is going through a ton and Stefan as a lot of ground to make up, in terms of being a good friend. He really does step up and does work hard to win her friendship back and he is her rock through the whole experience. It really bonds them beautifully and will lead to questions about are there feelings there, can those feelings go anywhere? We'll see how that plays out over the rest of the season," said Plec.

According The Hollywood Reporter, Caroline is going to have a tough time dealing with her mother's cancer diagnosis. In the beginning, she will give her mother a helpful hand by making her kale smoothies and giving her extra blankets, however she'll later become frustrated with the pace of "modern medicine." As a result, she'll consider giving her mother vampire blood in order to keep her alive.

Actor Paul Wesley, who plays Stefan, also dropped spoilers about the upcoming episode, which he directed, himself.

"This episode in my opinion is a much more grounded episode. It's actually not as mystical. There's not a lot of mythology in my episode; it's really about the more tender moments. The best and most exciting moments are the moments when we step away from all of that and we really get down to some beautiful interaction between two characters that is really intimate," Wesley told Entertainment Weekly. "What I love about my episode is that it is fast-paced, fast-paced, fast-paced, exciting, entertaining, and then it sort of slows down and there's this moment of real tenderness, which I think is so important on our show."

The CW also released a sneak peek ahead of Episode 6.11, featuring Liv in Damon's bedroom.

Season 6, Episode 11 of "The Vampire Diaries," titled "Woke Up With a Monster," will air Thursday, Jan. 22 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
