GTA 5 Gameplay & Sales: Game of the Year Golden Joystick Award Goes to Grand Theft Auto 5
Grand Theft Auto V was crowned Game of the Year at the 31st Golden Joystick awards today in London.
Grand Theft Auto V, the fastest selling video game ever, bested the The Last of Us for the most coveted gong. The Last of Us, which is only available for PlayStation 3, did not go home empty handed, however. The video game brought home the gongs for Best Storytelling and Best Newcomer.
Green Man Gaming presented the award show which received a record-breaking 10 million votes. As a result, the Golden Joysticks was the largest publicly-voted video game awards in the world, BBC reports.
The Hall of Fame award, however, is the only award selected by the Golden Joystick Awards. The gong went to Activision's Call of Duty, a franchise which, according to Telegraph, has sold over 160 million copies worldwide
Ken Levine, the man behind Bioshock and System Shock 2 received a lifetime achievement award, a new addition to the Golden Joysticks.
"The great thing about the still-maturing nature of video games is you get to be inspired by the work of novices and veterans alike," Levine said. "We're all figuring out day by day exactly what the medium is capable of."
Levine has also worked with Doug Church on Thief: The Dark Project, which is known for introducing stealth into video games.
"With revamped categories to reflect the diversity of modern gaming and the addition of the inaugural Lifetime Achievement award, which was deservedly presented to Ken Levine, one of the most interesting creators working in games, this year's ceremony has been the most thrilling yet," Andy Robinson, editor of Golden Joysticks and CVG, said.
