'Star Trek 3' News, Cast & Release Date: Scotty Actor Simon Pegg Working on Plot for 2016 Movie as Writer
Although the movie still is more than a year away, fans of the new “Star Trek” movie series will be happy to know that Simon Pegg will be co-writing the next movie’s script. It has not been revealed how involved Pegg will be, but it is confirmed that he will be writing.
Known as Montgomery Scott, or Scotty, in the “Star Trek” films, Pegg is one of the films’ funniest characters. Deadline first reported that Pegg, 44, will co-write the film’s script with Doug Jung. Jung is known for creating the TNT series “Dark Blue."
On Twitter, Harmony Corrigan, one of the persons in charge of Pegg’s account, confirmed on the social media site that the news were true.
Although it may sound peculiar for Pegg to write and star in the upcoming film, he has done that before. He co-wrote “Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz” and “The World’s End” with Edgar Wright, who directed the films. He also wrote “Rub Fatboy Run.”
The next "Star Trek" movie is scheduled to be released on July 8, 2016, just two months before the 50th anniversary of the “Star Trek” television series release, according to CNET. The show, created by Gene Roddenberry, aired for the first time on NBC on Sept. 8, 1966 and proved to be highly successful, spinning off into various other films and television shows up until 2004.
According to Variety, J.J. Abrams, director of the first two films in the franchise, will not be directing this installment, due to his commitment to Disney’s new “Star Wars” film. After Roberto Orci dropped out, Justin Lin took over the reins. Lin has directed the third, fourth, fifth and sixth installments of the “Fast and Furious” franchise.
