'So You Think You Can Dance' Season 12 News: Jason Derulo, Paula Abdul to Judge Reality Dance Competition
Paula Abdul and Jason Derulo have recently been announced as the new permanent judges to appear in the upcoming 12th season of "So You Think You Can Dance," People reports.
Us Weekly suggests that Abdul and Derulo's professional dancing skill and previous work on TV dancing competitions make them natural picks for the show.
Derulo appeared on "SYTYCD" as a guest judge in the past, while Abdul lent her performing expertise to "American Idol," "X-Factor" and CBS' short-lived show "Live to Dance," notes Us Weekly.
Following the news, Abdul tweeted out her excitement over her new gig and later issued a statement to People.
"I have dedicated a large part of my career as a choreographer to discovering and mentoring some of the most iconic artists and performers from all over the world," Abdul said. "'So You Think You Can Dance' has a long-standing history of launching brilliant careers for young choreographers and dancers in the industry. It's going to be a true honor and pleasure joining this panel with Jason and Nigel [Lythgoe], and I'm looking forward to an exciting new season!"
Nigel Lythgoe, who is the creator, executive producer and judge on "SYTYCD," mirrored Abdul's excitement in a statement to Entertainment Weekly where he described the 52-year-old veteran performer as an "incredible artist" that will bring " the perfect level of expertise and heart" to the judging panel next season.
Derulo also spoke publicly about his new position on the show, admitting that he is "eager" to contribute to the series and "be a part of new growth and continued success."
News of Abdul and Derulo's new roles on "SYTYCD" comes on the heels of Fox's announcement that longtime "SYTYCD" judge Mary Murphy would not be returning to the series.
E! News reported that Fox made the decision not to renew Murphy's contract for another season, but still praised the dancer/choreographer for her impactful work on the show over the course of 11 seasons.
