Australian Open 2015 Results, Steam, TV Schedule & Draws: Pablo Cuevas and Marcelo Melo Punch Ticket to Quarter-Finals of Tennis Grand Slam
The first grand slam of the year hasn't disappointed tennis fans. Huge aces, big upsets and thrilling matches have given viewers must watch television.
The No. 1 ranked player in the world, Novak Djokovic, has advanced to the quarterfinals, where he will take on Milos Raonic. Djokovic has seven career grand slam championships. The No. 3 ranked player in the world has also qualified for the quarterfinals. Rafael Nadal will look to win his 15th career grand slam championship, which would break a tie with Pete Sampras for second all-time.
The winningest tennis player of all-time is no longer competing at the Australian Open. Roger Federer was ousted by Italy's own Andreas Seppi in a exhilarating third round match. Federer will now have to wait until the French Open until he can win his 18th grand slam.
Singles Men's Draws for Quarterfinals
(1) Novak Djokovic vs. (8) Milos Raonic
(4) Stan Wawrinka vs. (5) Kei Nishikori
(7) Tomáš Berdych vs. (3) Rafael Nadal
(6) Andy Murray vs. Nick Kyrgios
Over in the doubles tournament, the excitement has been just as good, if not better. The No. 1 doubles team in the world (and all-time), the Bryan Brothers, suffered a huge upset loss in the third round. Florin Mergea and Dominic Inglot defeated the Bryans in straight sets sending the 16-time champions home.
One of the biggest storylines in the doubles have been the magic carpet ride of Pablo Cuevas and David Marrero. Cuevas and Marrero aren't even ranked heading into this year, but they find themselves in the quarterfinals after a perfect 3-0 record thus far.
The last Latin American-born tennis player to win at a doubles grand slam was Cuevas at the French Open in 2008, when he was paired with Peru's Luis Horna. If Cuevas can pull off the unthinkable this year, it would be the first time ever that a South American wins the Australian Open doubles competition.
But Cuevas isn't the only Latin American trying to make history.
The No. 4 ranked doubles squad in the world has also made it to the quarterfinals. Brazil's own Marcelo Melo and Ivan Dodig have yet to be defeated and will take on Feliciano López and Max Mirnyi next. Melo made it to the 2009 French Open finals and the 2013 Wimbledon finals, but he has yet to capture his first career grand slam championship.
