'Selma' Movie Cast: Star David Oyelowo, Director Ava DuVernay Reunite for Film About Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Louisiana
British actor David Oyelowo will reunite with "Selma" director Ava DuVernay for a new film set during Hurricane Katrina.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, this will mark the third time the pair is working together. In addition to the Martin Luther King biopic, the duo worked on "Middle of Nowhere" in 2012.
Oyelowo and DuVernay appear to be a good match thus far as "Selma" has received critical acclaim for both actor and director and grossing almost $40 million from U.S. audiences. Meanwhile, "Middle of Nowhere" won DuVernay the award for Best Director at the Sundance Festival in 2012.
DuVernay will write and direct the film and will share producing credits with Oyelowo. The British star is also in talks to play a main character. They will also be working with Participant Media, which previously worked on "Middle of Nowhere."
"Hurricane Katrina is one of the most important social and environmental stories of our time," Participant's Jonathan King said. "Ava DuVernay has shown herself to be highly skilled at bringing intimacy and contemporary urgency to epic events. We have been looking for the right way to get back in business with Ava, and with David Oyelowo, and are proud to reteam with them on her original idea, which we believe will be a powerful film."
The upcoming yet-to-be-titled film will be a love story and murder mystery set in the middle of the hurricane that devastated New Orleans in 2005. It was the deadliest disaster in U.S. history with over 1,800 people killed.
"The story we're interested in will explore the complexities of intimate relationships within times of chaos, while also examining the chaos itself. I'm looking forward to the journey," DuVernay said.
Despite the success of "Selma," the Academy Awards snubbed both actor and director. The film only received nominations for Best Song and Best Picture, sparking accusations of racism.
Oyelowo's next project is "Queen of Katwe" with Lupita Nyong'o.
