Fantastic Four 2015 Trailer & Movie Cast: What We Learned From New Teaser
With the release of the new Fantastic Four trailer, Fox has built anticipation and showed a completely new look to the franchise.
Since 2008 when "The Dark Knight" was released, studios have pushed their comic book properties in a new direction and have tried to steer away from the cartoony, comic book look. The studios have also tried to get away from an emphasis on super powers and instead have tried to drive the story through the characters.
From the look of the new trailer the film has a darker look similar to that of the latest "The Amazing Spider-Man" films and the latest "The Avengers: Age of Ultron" trailer.
The new trailer also shows a new origin story that is different from the original comics. According to the original 1961 comic series by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Fantastic Four gained their powers after exposure to cosmic rays while on a flight into outer space. From the look of the trailer, there is no spaceship and instead there are two scenes with the four entering some sort of capsules.
Trank has been adamant about using the modernized version from the 2004 "Ultimate Fantastic Four." That version has the heroes gain their powers after teleporting into another dimension known as the Negative Zone.
The trailer also shows the origin of The Thing. From the look of the trailer, it appears he will break out of some sort of rock chrysalis in simply transforming. It seems the film wants to be embedded in reality like the aforementioned comics.
The look of the costumes also seems different. Like the Batman movies, the new Spider-Man series and Man of Steel, the new uniforms look nothing like the ones in the comic books. They look darker and they appear to be more functional than decorative. The iconic "4" logo is also missing which may suggest that audiences will never hear the team mention itself as the Fantastic Four.
The trailer, however, still left some questions unanswered. One of the biggest mysteries yet to be revealed is how the members of the team are related to one another. In the comics, Reed Richards is married to Sue Storm. Johnny is Sue's brother, and Ben Grimm is a childhood friend.
However, these relationships seems a bit odd in this film given the age of the actors playing the roles.
Miles Teller, who is playing Johnny, seems a bit too young to be married to Sue, who is played by Kate Mara. Even more questionable is whether Mara and Michael B. Jordan will be brother and sister due to their racial differences.
However, it could be possible that the two are adopted or that their parents are divorced and remarried. Johnny's (biological?) father, Dr. Franklin Storm (played by Reg E. Cathey), makes an appearance in the trailer, and it appears he's the one running the teleportation experiment.
"Fantastic Four" is one of the most anticipated films of the year as audiences hope that the new film will refresh the series and create better films than the ones Fox previously made in 2005 and 2007. The new film tells the story of four young scientists who achieve superhuman abilities through a teleportation experiment gone haywire. They must now use these abilities to save the world from an uprising tyrant. The film is slated for release on August 7.
