Super Bowl Results, Scores & Highlights: New England Patriots Rally to Defeat Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX
The New England Patriots escaped with a dramatic 28-24 victory against the Seattle Seahawks to win Super Bowl XLIX on Sunday night at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
The Seahawks were in a good position to win their second straight Super Bowl after a sensational catch from Jermaine Kearse and a four-yard run from Marshawn Lynch on first down of the ensuing play, which put them at the 1-yard line.
However, the Seahawks made a questionable play on second down as quarterback Russell Wilson threw a pass into traffic instead of letting Lynch run the show for them. The decision proved to be costly as Patriots rookie Malcolm Butler made a game-winning interception, spoiling Seattle's back-to-back title bid.
"I just had a vision that I was going to make a big play and it came true," said Butler, who was also involved in the play were Kearse made a juggling catch. "I'm just blessed. I can't explain it right now. It's crazy."
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady had two crucial interceptions in the match, but those errors were not enough to overshadow his performance on Sunday night.
Brady completed 37 of his 50 passes for 328 yards with four touchdowns and had drives of 68 and 64 yards, enough for the 37-year-old quarterback to win his fourth Lombardi Trophy and third Super Bowl MVP award, tying the records set by Joe Montana.
"It wasn't the way we drew it up. It was a lot of mental toughness. Our team has had it all year. We never doubted each other, so that's what it took," Brady said of winning the Super Bowl.
The Patriots were ahead 14-7 late in the first half, but the Seahawks managed to level it up heading into the break. Steven Hauschka then made a field goal and Doug Baldwin scored a touchdown to give Seattle a 24-14 lead late in the third period.
Seattle managed to keep the lead until Danny Amendola caught a pass from Brady for a touchdown in the 7:55 mark of the final period to trim the lead down to three points. With 2:02 left to play, Brady connected with Julian Edelman for what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown for the Patriots.
"I've been at it for 15 years and we've had a couple of tough losses in this game," Brady said. "This one came down to the end, and this time, we made the plays."
