Hasbro Celebrates 80th Anniversary of Monopoly by Putting Real Money in Board Game : One Winner to Receive Over $20K
The board game "Monopoly" encourages buying properties, acquiring cash and charging big rents when your opponent lands on your properties. Now, if you buy the game in France, you could be gifted with up to 20,580 real euros.
Washington Post reports Hasbro is celebrating its 80th anniversary of Monopoly by having French manufacturers carefully place real cash inside 80 boxes of Monopoly. Sixty-nine boxes will contain five 10-euro notes and five 20-euro notes. Ten more boxes will contain five 20-euro notes, two 50-euro notes and one 100-euro note.
The big payday comes in the grand prize, of which only one is available. All the money slots in the game will be replaced with real euros equaling approximately $23,000.
The process of getting the euro into the boxes was done secretly in a small forest town in northeastern France.
"It wasn't easy to get the notes. They had to be escorted discreetly," Florence Gaillard, French brand manager for Monopoly's manufacturer Hasbro, said
To come up with the idea, a survey was conducted to see what players wanted to find in their boxes of Monopoly to celebrate the 80th anniversary. Over 50 percent of those surveyed asked for real money. The next highest idea was for free hotel accommodations.
In the U.S., Hasbro isn't doing the promotion. Instead, they are offering up a "vintage style board" to celebrate the anniversary, according to a press release from Hasbro.
Monopoly has been around since 1935. It was originally published by Parker Brothers. In 1991, Hasbro purchased Parker Brothers, and Monopoly has been a Hasbro game ever since.
