Naya Rivera Rolling Stone Cover: 'Glee' Star Named Latin Hot List 2013 Hot TV Queen [PIC]
"Glee" star Naya Rivera has become Rolling Stone's Latin Hot List 2013 Hot TV Queen.
Rivera plays Santana Lopez on Fox's hit musical comedy-drama "Glee." Santana is a former cheerleader and proud lesbian that Rivera embodies with suave sophistication. Now, Rolling Stone has put Rivera on the flip cover for their Latin Hot List 2013, which will be available in newsstands on Nov. 8.
Both of Rivera's parents are half-Puerto Rican, but she grew up in suburban Los Angeles disconnected from her heritage, not knowing how to speak Spanish. Before landing her breakthrough role on "Glee," Hollywood only wanted Rivera for "stereotypical roles," Rolling Stone reports.
"Once you break through on a show that is so culturally universal, people stop looking at you for your ethnicity," Rivera said.
Rivera is currently finishing her debut album after being signed to Columbia Records for three years.
"It took a long time to figure out where I wanted to go musically," she said.
The singer-actress is known for covering songs with county flair on "Glee" including Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" and Taylor Swift's "Mine." Rivera, however, wanted more soul on her record. She ignored Columbia Record's demos, wrote her own songs and selected her own producers: Tricky Stewart and John Lock.
"Sorry," Rivera told Columbia Records. "This is what I'm doing. Get on or get off. I think this is a summer song, and I want it on the radio by the end of the summer."
Gravity director Jonás Cuarón, novelist Daniel Alarcón and Becky G, who was named the "Next Queen of Teen Pop," is also featured in Rolling Stone's Hot List.
