Soccer Transfer Rumors: David De Gea to Stay at Manchester United; Cristiano Ronaldo Won’t Return to Old Trafford
Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is continuously being linked to a possible transfer to Real Madrid, but agent Jorges Mendes is convinced that his client will stay at Old Trafford.
De Gea is in contract with Manchester United until after next season. Rumors suggested that Real Madrid will make a strong push to acquire the 24-year-old via a transfer deal with Manchester United or just wait for De Gea to be eligible for a free transfer next year.
But while a move to Real Madrid makes sense for De Gea because he will return to his home country, Mendes believes the Spain international will eventually sign a new contract to extend his stay at Old Trafford.
"He has one year left on his contract and I think that he will stay in Manchester," Mendes said of De Gea, who moved to Manchester United via a £17.8 million deal with Atletico Madrid. "The player will decide, but he's happy there, at the moment."
De Gea, the reigning Manchester United Player of the Year, has been excellent for his club this season as he has already tallied 62 saves in 23 Barclays Premier League matches.
Meanwhile, Mendes also played down talks about a possible reunion between Manchester United and Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, who spent six seasons at Old Trafford before moving to Bernabeu.
Mendes admitted that Manchester United fans still have a special place in Ronaldo's heart, but the agent insisted that the Portugal international will not return to Old Trafford because he can see the superstar forward ending his career with Real Madrid.
Mendes also pointed out that a club will have to break the bank if they want to acquire Ronaldo because of the lucrative release clause in his contract with the Spanish powerhouse club.
"Cristiano Ronaldo? One billion," Mendes said when asked about Ronaldo's release clause. "His buyout clause one billion, so it is one billion. If, for any reason, the club decides to sell him tomorrow for 300 million, someone will pay."
On the other hand, Mendes also gave his take on Radamel Falcao's situation at Old Trafford.
Falcao is currently playing at Old Trafford after the club struck a one-year loan agreement with Monaco, but the superstar striker has yet to live up to expectations. Mendes is unsure if Falcao will return to Old Trafford next season, but he is convinced the Colombia international will draw the interest of several top-tier clubs in the offseason.
