'Parenthood' Season 6, Episode 13 Spoilers and Recap: Series Creator Talks Series Finale 'May God Bless and Keep You Always,' the Scene He Regrets Cutting [Watch]
After six gut-wrenching and tear-jerking seasons, NBC's "Parenthood" came to an end last week with a bitter-sweet series finale.
"May God Bless and Keep You Always" was filled with both highs and lows that helped bring each storyline to full circle. The biggest highlight was Sarah's wedding to Hank. Other milestones included Crosby's decision to run The Luncheonette by himself and Julia and Joel's decision to adopt Victor's birth sister. However, reality set in when Zeek died peacefully in his sleep not long after Sarah's wedding.
The finale ended with a flash forward scene that gave fans a peak into the Braverman lives three years from now, which was filled with happiness, love, fertility and success.
Following the series finale, NBC released a few deleted scenes that were cut from the last episode. In one scene, Amber's absent father, played by John Corbett, stops by to meet his grandson and discovers that Sarah plans to get remarried.
"That was a scene that had to be cut for time, and that was one I regret having to cut because it was a moment that, if you were a fan of the show over the years, John Corbett has done such great work, so it was a shame to have to lose that," said series creator Jason Katims, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Katims also opened up about the decision to have Zeek die in the finale.
"Over the course of the series I've wanted to tell the story of losing a family member, but I never wanted to do it because I didn't want to lose any of those great actors, honestly," Katims explained. "Even the way we broke the story of Zeek dying kept him in the show until the last possible minute because I thought the most powerful way to tell that story would be by watching this family deal with this over time, which is how it happens a lot."
Katims added that he is able to relate to the story because he dealt with the death of his parents.
"Sometimes things happen over time, and so we wanted to tell the story in that way," he said. "So when we knew that this was the final season, I felt like this was our moment to deal with this very intense subject and when we did decide to do it, I felt like that was the story that was the glue of the season, and everybody else's stories weaved in and out around that."
