Samsung Galaxy S6 Release Date, Specs, Price, & Features Rumors Begin Solidifying Ahead of Samsung Unpacked Event
As we get closer to March, more and more details about the upcoming unveiling and eventual release date for the Samsung Galaxy S6 seem to be solidifying some previous leaks and rumors as fact -- or at least as credible pictures of what to expect. Here's what's new.
We'll Find Out Everything on March 1
Firstly, we have the unveiling date, which is almost certainly going to be on the day before the opening of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
Samsung sent out a teaser invite for the "Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2015" event, taking place in Barcelona on March 1.
This is the same playbook Samsung has used for previous flagship smartphones, so it's a pretty good bet that "What's Next," as Samsung teased in the invite graphic, is the Samsung Galaxy S6.
Two Versions, One With the Edge
The next long-standing rumor, that the Samsung Galaxy S6 would come with a curved edge variant similar to last year's Galaxy Note Edge, is becoming more and more believable, especially after one particular development this week.
On Thursday, CNET Korea received a leaked image that seems to depict rendered images (i.e., not an actual photo) of the Samsung Galaxy S6, along with a variant with one curved edge. In addition, leaked image had text: "Galaxy S6" and "Galaxy Edge" labels in bold white on red type.
Obviously the image on CNET could be a fake, but if not, it both confirms the existence of an "edge variant" along with the Galaxy Edge name, while lending some credibility to an earlier rumor we had been skeptical of -- namely, that the GS6 Edge might have dual curved edges on both sides of the screen. According to CNET, a careful look at two of the rendered images suggests that both sides of the display will be curved, but we're not holding our breaths for that.
Premium Build Materials
Two of the devices in the CNET image are covered with a rendered smartphone case, but the other handsets in the leaked render appear to show metallic bezels, which could confirm the (likely true) rumor that Samsung is applying more premium build designs and materials in this year's flagship, maybe in response to consistent criticism over the Samsung's continued use of plastic.
Finally a report from the usually reliable SamMobile might confirm what colors to expect the new handset in. According to the Samsung-centric news blog, it will be available in dark blue, green, gold, and white.
Still-Unknown Specs
There's still some question about the specs of the new Samsung Galaxy S6, though you can pretty safely rule out a Qualcomm Snapdragon system on a chip (SoC) at the center of it.
Whether the GS6 will come with a 5.0-inch or 5.2-inch display is still in question, though it's likely to sport QHD resolution. And while the 64-bit Exynos 7420 SoC is pretty much a given at this point, it's still unknown whether the camera will be upped to 20-megapixels, as some rumors have stated, or whether Samsung will stick to the 16-megapixel shooter it put in the Galaxy S5.
Of course, while it's very likely there will be an Edge variant, there's still the question of whether it'll feature one curved side or two.
